Buying insurance in Portugal? Trusted sources to check before you decide

Before you sign up for a policy, it pays to check who is selling it and which company will actually cover you. This page brings together the sources where you can verify insurers and insurance brokers, understand health insurance in Portugal and, if you have just moved here, find the public services you will need.

Each entry tells you what type of source it is and what to use it for. Most of these sites are in Portuguese. This is general information, not a substitute for reading your policy terms or getting advice from a registered insurance broker.

How to check that an insurer or insurance broker is authorised

The ASF is the authority that supervises insurance in Portugal. Check here before you sign or pay.

Health insurance and medical networks: where to check

With health insurance, the insurer carries the risk while the provider network may be run by another company. Always check which network applies to your policy.

Moved to Portugal? Official sources to start with

Before choosing insurance, sort out residence, public services and social security. Always confirm current information on the original site.

How we chose these sources

  • Official sources first: regulators and public bodies.
  • Insurer and network operator sites are commercial. Use them to look up networks, not as independent reviews.
  • Being listed here does not mean a partnership, endorsement or agreement with Planeia.
  • Always check the latest version on each site and read your policy terms before deciding.
